Quilted Stocking Free Pattern File + Tutorial

Quilted Stocking

'Tis the season to create something cozy, personalized, and festive!

In this quick and easy tutorial, we'll show you how to use your INNOVA Longarm with AutoPilot Mach 3 to make beautiful quilted stockings. Whether you're starting fresh with a new quilt top or upcycling an old quilt, this project is customizable and fun for all skill levels.

As a special holiday treat, we're offering a FREE stocking template pattern for a limited time!

Materials Needed

• Main outer body fabric (quilted)

Create your own quilt top or repurpose an old quilt. I added a fun quilt block to the upper section of my stockings and used muslin for the backing since it won't be visible after assembly.

• Inside liner fabric

• Binding fabric (optional, for finishing the top opening)

• Fabric or ribbon for a hanging loop: Approximately 6–8" depending on your preference.

Step 1: Quilt Your Fabric Using AutoPilot Mach 3

AutoPilot Project Set-up

Download and import the ABM Stocking.pat file into AutoPilot Mach 3

Add the pattern onto the viewport.

Use the Transform tool with Maintain Ratio selected to size your stocking to your preference.

I sized my large stocking to be approximately 19" x 14" and my smaller stocking to be approximately 15" x 9".

With the pattern selected, click the Copy icon to duplicate the pattern.

Click the Flip Vertical icon to mirror the duplicated pattern.

Repeat the steps above to add multiple stockings to your project.

Dequeue the stocking patterns if they are queued

Quick AutoPilot Mach 3 Edge-to-Edge Tutorial:

For this project, I quilted my fabric using the Modern Poinsettia edge-to-edge design by Sew Shabby. You can purchase the pattern below:

Bring your desired Edge-to-Edge pattern onto the viewport.

Use the Transform tool to resize the pattern to fit your project.

Preview the size using the Actual Size option on the top toolbar.

Select the Edge-to-Edge tool and choose Trim and Clip Connect.

Set the edge-to-edge width and height slightly larger than your quilt top.

Click Generate Edge-to-Edge.

Drag and adjust the rows as needed (e.g., offset rows or align them closely).

Click Accept.

Save your project.

Trim excess pattern as necessary using the Trim tool (e.g., to avoid quilting onto canvas leaders or Red Snappers).

The orange portion of the pattern indicates what will be trimmed, Invert if needed).

Use the Group tool to link rows within the sew zone. Ensure the group fits the sew zone.

Click Accept.

Click Go to begin quilting.

Step 2: Stitch the Stocking Pattern

Once your fabric is quilted, Right-click and queue the stocking pattern.

For better visibility during cutting, stitch the stocking pattern with a contrasting thread color.

Press Go to stitch out the stocking pattern.

Step 3: Construct Your Stocking

Cutting and Assembly:

Cut along the stitched pattern line to create the outer fabric pieces.

Using the stocking piece as a template, cut two liner pieces from your inside fabric with the fabric folded.

Lay out the quilted and lining pieces, ensuring all toes point in the same direction.

Place each liner piece right sides together with its corresponding quilted piece. Sew straight across the top opening.

Sewing the Stocking Together:

Open up the two sewn sections and place them right sides together.

Sew along the outer edge, leaving a 3–4" opening in the liner for turning.

Clip the seam allowance along the curved edges (toe and heel) without cutting into the seam. This ensures smooth curves when turned.

Turn the stocking right side out and close the liner opening with your preferred method.

Finishing Touches:

Push the liner into the stocking.

Finish the top edge with binding or a topstitch.

Secure your hanging loop to the upper corner.
